On March 1, 1937, community members connected to Waterford High School in Loudoun County, Virginia, signed a petition objecting to the Virginia Department of Education's decision to close Waterford High School. [page 1] A meeting of the patrons of the Waterford High School & other interested citizens of the community was held on the night of March 1, 1937 for the purpose of making a concerted effort to have reversed the recent decision of the State Board of Education, depriving the Waterford community of an accredited or certificated High School.
It was the unanimous opinion of those present that the decision of the Board of Education was more far reaching in its effect than any decision they had ever rendered affecting the School System of Loudoun County, more particularly in the case of the Waterford High School. We realize it is not alone the effect it might have upon those boys and girls desiring an education, who happen to be so un- fortunately situated that they would be absolutely deprived of the benefits of a high school education, even though the local school board might put into effect the best means available to transport pupils to an accredited high school. The effect upon the community itself is so far reaching that only those in direct contact with local conditions can properly estimate the devastating effect that will surely be accomplished.
Since it is clear to every patron of this school that it probably is not within the jurisdiction of the local school board to have by its own initiative this decision or ruling of the state board of Education or its Superintendent, reversed. It is then the duty of every sinsible fair minded man, woman or child interested, to prepare to gird for battle and to use every means at their command, political or otherwise, to accomplish this great purpose.
Now be it Resolved: That the Patrons of the Waterford High School and interested members of the community whose names are signed below, do unanimously request the School Board of Loudoun County to use every effort at their command to have this school accredited or certificated, and that their records show their approval or disapproval of this re-quest, and same recorded in the minutes of their meeting held this day, March 9, 1937.
Be it further Resolved: That the Superintendent Mr. O.L. Emerick, endorse or approve these resolutions and that said approval or endorsement be also recorded in the minutes of this same meeting.
