Petition (white schools) 1939 Pleasant Valley requests bus so that children won't have to walk and stand in snow
-
Description
-
This letter, dated September 9, 1939, from residents of Sterling, Virginia addressed to the Superintendent of Schools in Loudoun County, O. L. Emerick, highlights the concerns of parents regarding the safety and accessibility of the "Blue spring road" recently graveled that children have to walk on to reach school. With nearly twenty children within a two-mile radius having to walk to the school bus stop in adverse weather conditions, the parents request the school bus route be extended to accommodate these students.

Petition file
Sterling, Va. Route 1.
Sept. 19. 1939
Mr O. L. Emerick
Supt. of Schools, Loudoun Co.
Dear Sir,
We are residents of that section, east of Pleasant Valley, known as the “Blue Spring road, which, inadvertently, has just been graveled.
There are within a two mile radius, nearly twenty children, of school age.
Several of these children are small, and, at present, have to walk to the pike and then wait for the school-bus.
When the winter sets in, this will be practically impossible. They cannot stand out of doors, in all kinds of weather, after walking this distance.
We, as the parents of these children, would like the bus to come out, this road, for them.
We hope you will give this plan, your consideration and approval. (over)
